Tania Von Pear Interview

Tania's career really took off in October 2003 when she went solo as a DJ, having previously been a part of a girl duo, with a set as the sole "Future Heroine" at Tribal Gathering Weekender andbeing signed to Ministry of Sound Radio. Now a resident for The Gallery, a club that has a strong history of female residents (Sister Bliss & Lottie) and Minimar at The White House as well as presenting the Tuesday night house show for Ministry of Sound Radio, Tania has blossomed into a seriously hot talent on the scene.
Describing her sound as "big room house", Tania is as well known for her music as she is for her energetic performances behind the decks as she can often be found rockin out harder than the crowd while bringing in the next track and cueing up an accapella…her motto is to make them sweat and
never leave the dancefloor!

With Tania about to start her new residency for Minimar @ The White House we caught up withthis hardworking girl to see what she has been up to.

Tania Von Pear

Q: Hi Tania Hows it going ? We read that you a DJ, producer, label manager, promoter and you write articles for M8 magazine.
So how did it all start for you in this industry ?
A: One day there was a little girl called Tania and she saw a big fat friendly giant (no really, his name was Simon!) mixing records…being the bold inquisitive type she was curious and asked what he was doing. He showed her the basics but was very bad himself, it wasn't until a handsome prince rode in on his moped (he was the main DJ at my college) taught them both how to do it! She then spent the entire time at college sitting in their house annoying them with bad mixing while she learnt how to do it and not doing any work whatsoever and they all lived happily ever after!

Q: Whats it like being one of very few women in a male dominated industry ?
A: Hmmm, well, I often get asked this question and honestly, I don't think anyone really takes much notice anymore that you've got boobs and not muscles! On the plus side you can sing along with records and bop about more - its fun!

Q: Was it hard to break into the industry and what would be your tip to
other budding female DJ's?
A: It was relatively hard…I started out in a girl duo so there was a novelty factor
that definitely helped. For me, the main thing is not to get caught up in the industry too much, it's a mugs game! Just enjoy what you do, give out CD's to as many people as you can and be friendly…everyone wants to work with people that are easy to
get along with. At the end of the day, I still can't get over the fact people fly
me around the world and pay me to play records! Hell, I'd do it for free but
my agent would kill me!

Q: You are part of the Sedition DJs roster. what is Sedition and how did
you get involved with them?
A: Sedition Djs is a revolutionary organization involved in undermining the authority of the state with music! Well, that's what the word "sedition" means anyway… :o) The lovely Matthew and Yvonne Duffield run an agency of superb DJs from established names like Mike Monday to super hot new talent like Tommy Four Seven.
I've been friends with them both for over eight years and originally we ran parties together called Movin' House so I was privileged to be the first DJ on their roster -
a fact that I am incredibly proud of!

Q: What have been up to recently and what can we expect from you over
the next couple of months ?
A: Well, I just got back from Russia last weekend playing at Snow Project (a 2000 capacity venue in Ekaterinburg) and this evening I recorded my show for MoS Radio which goes out every Tuesday evening from 10pm so I think I am a little tired…hence the crazy answers to this interview I guess! I am finishing a new track with Graeme Lloyd this week which is a cheeky bootleg that's gonna be large and have another project on the go with a mate Austin. For the next few months you can catch me at my residency at The Gallery with my night Going Places as well as starting a new residency for Minimar at The White House - yahey! I will also be around London town plus Russia, Brighton, Birmingham, Lithuania, Romania and more!

Q: You've had some great gigs over the past year. which have really stood out
for you as something special?
A: Wow…tough question…! Going Places @ Turnmills is without a doubt always my favorite gig as it's my home turf and I love the crowd, the club and the people I work with - it's a privilege to play for a legendary club like The Gallery!

Q: What releases have you got coming up?
A: Currently it's on hold as I am so busy with gigs, productions and radio plus I made a conscious decision to work with other labels as I had only released on my own label. You know, artists can be right pains in the arse so I am enjoying being on
the other end for a change!! LOL!

Q: Moving away from your own production which artists feature in your DJ sets the most at the moment? What labels and artists are doing it for you right now?
A: There's so much good music from producers like James Talk, Nic Fanciulli, James Zabiela, Mark Knight, Dave Spoon, Anton Neumark, Tom Neville, Martijn Ten Velden, Micky Slim, Sebrof Divad, Johan Ilves and my new discovery My Digital Enemy are
all really doing it for me at the moment!

Q:March 11th sees you playing in the at the launch party for Minimar @ The White House. I recently saw you rock at Turnmills for your night Going Places. What can we expect to hear from you on the 11th ? Will it be similar to your normal sets?
A: Minimar gives me the chance to explore another side to my music which I am very excited about - I will be playing deepier, techier house and being more experimental.
I want to try and push my sound and have discovered some amazing new artists and labels searching for tracks to play - it's gonna rock and I can't wait, especially as
The White House has just had over £750,000 spent on it including a new sound system installed by the guy who did Fabric - it's massive!!

Q:Finally ,who is your tip for 2007 ?
A: You know what….ME! This is my year, I've just been made the House Resident for The Gallery and I've productions, radio shows, gigs and more coming out my ears…
TvP TIME!

Thanks for taking 5 minutes to chat with me, I hope to see you on the dancefloor at
the Minimar White House Launch party on the 11th! :o)
MARCH WITH MINIMAR 2007 Press...
