James Zabiela

James Zabiela - Perseverance EP

ARTIST: JAMES ZABIELA
TITLE: PERSEVERANCE EP
LABLE: RENAISSANCE
RELEASED: Dec 2007

It is pretty much a given that James Zabiela is one of the most technically talented DJs on the planet, he’s had a massive year (more on that in a minute) and with this new EP he goes one step further, showing just how he has excelled as a producer.

The ‘Perseverance' EP sees James explore new ground with heady soundscapes and heartfelt melodies.

Human’ - Ethereal vocals and lush pads create a brave techy sound. Just when you think this is going to be a downtempo number the distorted rubber bass pings the track into action giving it a satisfying heads down groove

‘Perseverance' – The title track is a melancholic slice of house, James takes the role of beat scientist, drawing influences from far and wide to create one of his most accomplished pieces of work to date . The sincere string breakdown and jabbing synths are compounded with an understated kick.

.No Other way but Down - is a total gem and arguably one of the most notable tracks, the production is mature and there is a definite nod to one of his long-time loves,
Depeche Mode.

Phaser Fire   - is unashamedly classic James. With Zabiela-esque glitches– it's homage to his love of all things android and something of a friendly face in otherwise new territory. James' vocal's feature on every track – but don't call him a singer! He comments

“I would never dream of performing these tracks live, they're not full vocal songs I just thought they made a nice addition to the tracks and what better way to convey a thought or feeling than to actually say it.

“I'm a bit of a control freak and I wanted the solo effort to be just that. Solo. I worked with people in the past and with the exception of Nic Fanciulli I find it harder to partner up in the studio .”

This is, essentially to James the most “personal” thing he has ever released, although he points out whatever resonance they may hold for him this collection of tracks are very much aimed at getting people raving. So, back to the exceptional year that has been 2007 - James teamed up with Nic Fanciulli in February to form the ONE+ONE alliance – involving a major worldwide tour and their x 2 disc compilation featuring a stellar track selection.

Armed with his fully loaded laptop, FX units, CDs and other box of tricks, James has crafted his own place on the scene. He holds residencies at Space--Ibiza and Pacha- New York and had successful previous compilations on Renaissance as well as EPs and singles, following on from his earlier works 'Robophobia' and 'Weird Science'.

With the likes of Sasha, Royksopp and Depeche Mode calling upon him for remixes, Zabiela's 2006 re-rub of "Seal Clubbing" by Charlie May vs Sasha spent several weeks at #1 in both the Beatport and DJ Download sales charts. In 2006 James was awarded the People's Choice accolade as 'Best International DJ' at the Australian Dance Music Awards. In 2007 he was awarded the Best British DJ at the DJ Mag Best British DJ Awards. James also moved up 4 places in this year's DJ Mag Top 100 poll, he now stands as one of the top 20 DJs in the world at #17.

The ‘Perseverance' EP shows it's only a matter of time until James achieves his dream of “o ne day making an electronic LP with real songs on it and that test my abilities as a producer/song writer.”
